Chong Wei Craves World Title

GUANGZHOU, (China), Aug 3- Nothing will satisfy Malaysia’s world number one men’s singles shuttler Datuk Lee Chong Wei more than lifting the world champion’s title at the World Badminton Championship 2013 which gets underway at the Tianhe Gymnasium here on Monday. Chong Wei said he is all primed for the task as he has yet to bag this title. “I hope I can do my best to realise this elusive dream,” he said when met by reporters after the national squad’s first training session at the same venue Saturday. Chong Wei and the 21 other players in the squad arrived here yesterday after the final phase of training over 10 days for the meet in Hong Kong. He is also hoping that luck will be on his side this time at this venue. The last time he played here was in the China Open a few years ago but lost to China’s Bao Chunlai in the final. “The first time I played here was at the World Junior Championships 13 years ago. I have never won a title here (this venue) and I hope it will be different this time,” he said. On the Chinese line up, Chong Wei said he did not want to think too much about it and that his focus was raising his game to a new level. “Certainly they will have home advantage. I will do my very best and am more confident this time,” said. Besides his traditional arch rival Lin Dan, Chong Wei’s path to becoming champion will also face hurdles in the form of three Chinese aces namely Chen Long, Du Pengyu dan Wang Zhengming. At the last edition of the World Championship in London in 2011, Chong Wei lost to Lin Dan in the final. Besides Chong Wei, the other Malaysians featuring in the singles are Liew Darren and Chong Wei Feng. – BERNAMA
